Save Money with a Staycation

You put in your hours. You do the daily grind. When payday rolls around, however, there isn’t enough money left over to go on a much-needed vacation. While you might not be able to lounge poolside at a resort or go sightseeing in Europe, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a blast on your time off. That’s what a staycation is all about.

Staycation is slang for a stay-at-home vacation. The term became popular about a decade ago between the time when the price of gasoline soared and when a global recession set in. Considering the economy has not improved for many workers in the last ten years, the term stuck around to become part of everyday speech.

So what can you do on your staycation? Several things, actually. We’ve come up with ideas that have affordability and fun in mind. Mix and match with what’s best for you and enjoy!

Backyard Camping

Growing up, you probably thought camping out in the back yard was a big adventure. Chances are you didn’t have fancy camping gear then, so why should that stop you now? If the weather cooperates on your time off, head outside to cook marshmallows by the fire, tell spooky stories, and sleep under the stars! You’ll make memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Family Game Night

Dust off those board games and gather your crew together for a night of dice-tossin’, card-drawin’ friendly competition. You can turn this staycation idea into a regular family activity that will never go out of season.

Library Visit

In addition to offering readers books, magazines, and newspapers, a good community library also has movies to borrow and hosts family-friendly events and activities. Stop in for a visit to find out all that’s going on during your staycation.

Virtual Museum Tour

Many museums in Canada offer virtual tours of their exhibits and art collections. You can also enjoy the online offerings of famous museums like the Louvre in Paris or the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican. After your virtual tour, stop in at your local coffee shop for some stimulating, caffeine-fueled conversation.

Dinner and a Movie

If seeing movies on the big screen is your thing, catch the latest blockbuster or two at your local theatre during your time off. Skip the 3D option and go during matinee hours. The money you save could be better spent on a family meal or fine dining with your date.

Local Festival

All kinds of festivals are held on weekends in or around larger cities, especially in the warmer months. Do an online search for “things to do in [city name]” to find out when and where festivals take place. Festivals are a great way to spend time on an afternoon or weekend, and admission to most events is minimal or free.

The Great Outdoors

Sometimes you just have to get away from it all and go for a walk in the woods. But why just hike? Head to the great outdoors to also bike, fish, camp, and swim. Be sure to pack enough food and water for the adventure and remember to take a lot of pictures!

Stay-at-Home Splurges

If you have the money to do something extra special for yourself or your family, this might be the right time to attend a concert, go to a major league sporting event, or pamper yourself at a salon or spa.

Just because you’re staying home during your time off doesn’t mean you have to do ordinary things. Schedule plans, set a budget, and make your staycation extraordinary!
